Dr Premek Sonnek

Canvey GP

Painting of Dr Premek Sonnek by Paul Riley dated 1984

A member of the Archive was approached by Harvey, Copping and Harrison solicitors through library staff. The solicitors were handling Dr Sonnek’s estate and had an oil painting of him which neither the beneficiary nor the original artist wanted so it was destined for the bin. It had a last minute reprieve when the Archive agreed to take it until a suitable home could be found. We were delighted when the Heritage Centre said they would like to display it and so the painting was officially presented to them at their April committee meeting.

It would have been sad if the painting had been lost because Dr Premek Sonnek was a long-standing and well-respected Canvey GP. He joined Drs Lintner and Machacek in a group practice in Furtherwick Road in 1954.

The Archive would like to find out more about Dr Sonnek’s life as well as how he came to sit for the painting.

Does anyone know anything about the artist, Phil Riley?

  • I worked at NEALS, I had a real bad skin eruption, Miss  BROWN our supervisor told me I was to go home until I got my skin sorted out.

Dear DR SONNEK, said I will cure you with my cream, and get you backt to work, five days of his magic cream I went backtowork it was called Accremicen, something like that I was 15
