George Brittain

One of his early residences

You can read the very good article about George Brittain on the Benfleet Community Archive site also on the Canvey site with his connection to our Methodist Church.

I have not found the name in the Electoral Roll for 1918 and 1929 so do not know where on the Island this was situated. If any one knows please make a comment below.

Quote from the Benfleet site

Right from the earliest days of our family Father had a summer residence in the district of South East Essex.  Because the Duchy of Cornwall was one of Father’s largest customers he named each of these residences in turn The Duchy.

  • In 1910, I believe this Property was down a road called Hitteren Road which came off Somnes Ave, near Winter gardens. The Modern Road “George Close” probably cuts where the property was. It was purchased about March 1903, contained two reception Rooms, 3 Bedrooms and a glass addition in rear. The front of the property faced WEST, so the balcony on top faced SOUTH.

I believe it may have also been know as “Rozells”.

  • I suspect that the following link might lead to the original building plans based upon that the fact that in 1910 there was only one property down Hitteren Road, and assuming these plans were developed, it might be this.
