Lakeside Corner

Close-up

This is one of the Echo photos. It does not have a date on it but says ‘this is where the mini roundabout could be sited’. So it is before one way traffic was brought in and the Toy Shop is still on the corner of Waarden Road.

Can anyone remember exactly when this could be? Late 70s/early eighties?

  • This is pre construction of the Knghtswick Centre as I remember it. The shops opposite the Halifax (which was Lipton’s supermarket) have been demolished and it was like this for about three years – I think between 1974 and the construction of the Knightswick Centre in 1977.

There was a much smaller one way system which essentially encircled the library and Barclays Bank.

  • Surely the one way system was built & opened under pressure after continued flooding of the previous high street access road now folksville road sometime around 1968/9 at the same time they resurfaced the pavement outside what is now Iceland and further along at grouts which if remember correctly was Qwenbies chemist.

  • I think this is around 1974 when the Johnsons opened the cafe in the old junk shop .
