Southend Telegraph 1915

Ladies’ Gymnastic Class.—An interesting display of physical exercises and dances was given at Cox’s Cafe on Saturday, under the direction of Miss Clara James, with Mrs. Tilleard and Miss Annie James at the piano. Items on the programme consisted of dumbbell drill, wands, flag race, Indian club, circular jumping, flag march to patriotic airs, Irish jig, which, was loudly applauded and encored, tambourine dance, and a most effective march in dark with coloured lanterns, finished with songs, the performers seated in a circle. Afterwards a presentation was made to Mrs Tilleard and Miss James as a token of appreciation from the Canvey Ladies’ Gymnastic Team. The evening ended with a running maze, “God Save the King,” and “Auld Lang Syne.” The ladies who gave the excellent performance were: Mesdames Chambers, Buckland, Murrell, Machin, Naylor, Lovick, Evans, L. Wood, D. Wood, Harman, and Cole. They are much to be congratulated on their work and hope for other such delightful entertainments.
