Charfleets Farm House

By J A Latta and dated 1888

What a great painting.
Barbara who lives in Australia tells us-

It (the watercolour) was given to me by an old friend of my Mother’s family and she said the property had belonged to her family.

I always thought the artist was a family member or a family friend.

Barbara also said the old family friend went by the name of Plumridge and was born c1890s she had a sister and neither married the mother’s surname was Startup. But no one of that name appears at Charfleets during the time scale we are looking at.

We strongly believe but have no proof that J A Latta is in fact John Atherton Latta. He does not show up in any paperwork we have so far with any connection with Canvey. He was a builder in East London and emigrated to Australia around 1890/1900. The last we see of him in London is 1888 and the next we find him in the electoral registers in Victoria in 1903 where it states he is a farmer. Then his son Edgar Artherton Latta gets married in Victoria in 1906. John Atherton died in Victoria in 1926.
