Radio Men Go to The Rescue

Essex Weekly News 6th February 1953

Two Marconi ambulances and members of the Marconi Division, St. John Ambulance Brigade, were among those who helped with rescue work and the evacuation of Canvey Island throughout Sunday and late into the night.

The call for assistance came from the Home Service Ambulance headquarters before lunch to Mr. A C. Bedwell, Superintendent of the Division, who immediately mobilised seven of his fittest men in Chelmsford.

They drove at once to Canvey Island in the two works ambulances. There they set up operations in the Island’s secondary school, and later moved further up a river which had once been the main road to the Fire Station, after it was found that working was easier there.

The county ambulances were busy elsewhere, and until late in the evening Mr. Bedwell assisted much of the rescue work by firemen.

After dark one driver had to be guided along the flooded roadway by Mr. A. Course, Divisional Officer, walking on foot. Both ambulances travelled over 100 miles during the day.
