Earlier this month Janet Walden and I went on a trip to Berkshire. We were visiting the Douai Abbey Library and Archives where we at long last knew the records of the Canvey Anglican Convent were deposited. We had no idea what we were going to find. We still had one of the Sisters who was buried in the cemetery in the Convent grounds to identify. We hoped to find out a little about the Convent and the Sisters who lived and died there. Perhaps some photos and useful documents.

Boy did we find what we wanted and so much more. Most has now been uploaded to this section of the site and has also been passed onto Sister Barbara of the Sisters of Mercy who started us on this quest.

The monks at the Abbey were very interested in what we were doing and I had to tell our story several times over. They were very pleased we had found what we were looking for and gave us permission to use our photos on our site. Even the lady where we stayed was interested and the story had to be told again.

These are a few photos I took at the Abbey. The Abbey Church although very modern and unusual definitely had an atmosphere of peace and calm as did the Library and Archive. We managed to contain our excitement when we found all these great photos and papers. But it was a struggle.
