Sir Francis Chichester

Arriving in the Thames 1967

Sir Francis Chichester arriving in the Thames in his yacht, Gypsy Moth IV, following his epic single-handed voyage around the world. Sir Francis was the first man to race around the world solo with only one port of call, Sydney, the journey took nine months and one day.

These pictures were taken by Bill Lettice and Albert Groom, who as members of Tewkes Creek Yacht Club, formed part of the escort from Southend to Tilbury.
