These bright-eyed youngsters at a Canvey school are helping to give the gift of sight to the blind.

Since the seat of learning in Hilton Road opened its gates to little students 17 years ago the pupils of St Katherine’s Church of England school have raised enough money to train seven guide dogs for the blind.

There was a surprise at the end of term assembly when the excited children had a visit from blind Mrs Dolly Allen and her guide dog Bobby.

Headmistress Mrs Janice Davies said: “This charity is very popular with young children because they are always attracted to the animals. They raised the latest £250 from fund-raising and collections in the schools. The puppy which they will train will be called Honey.”

Mrs Allen received a £250 cheque on behalf of the Guide Dogs For The Blind Association.
