School pupils learned tolerance and understanding from their Dutch friends during an exchange visit this week. More than 30 youngsters from Sintermeerten school in the Netherlands visited Furtherwick Park School, Canvey for a five day stay. The two schools have been exchanging visits for ten years-but not because of the area’s Dutch links. It all started when a drama teacher at Furtherwick Park arranged the visit with a friend from the school in Heerlen. The drama teacher has since left the school but the visits continue-Furtherwick pupils will return to Holland next spring. Deputy Head Chris Richardson said: ‘The youngsters get a better understanding of how other people live. I have overheard on e of the pupils yesterday who was saying how nice the Dutch students were. He sounded surprised-now maybe he’ll realise that not everyone outside England is horrible.

  • Chris Richardson who was Deputy Head at the time is on the left. Behind Len Took is one of the teachers from the Dutch college whose name I can’t remember – unfortunately.
