I was born at my house in Little Gypps Road and lived there 1962 to when I got married in 1987.
A distant memory as more in my youth but the face is very familiar and sure we saw “Herbert” going past most days. Seemed to recall he lived off Cedar Road, but if someone can put me right.
It is a great photo and while not a Canvey “legend”, still someone most people recognised even though they may not have talked to him.

I remember him well. Not only did he come to my wedding when I got married to my first husband we rented a room with him and his wife. He was a lovely man.

Just seen this artical, was Ted’s wife called Min? Who had two or three boys? My Grandad Albert Herbert had a brother called Ted, who lived in canvey, I remember seeing him once late 60s round my grandads house in Walthamstow London , I’m his nephew David’s son Steve Herbert (56)

He was a Chimney sweep but then worked at The Gold Mine.
He was also my grandad and his son Colin is my dad. My name was Julie Herbert

Ted was married to Mini and lived in Canvey.
All of us on here are are related. Other than the lady that remembered him and his wife.
I am the Eldest to his Son Colin He had a Son Jeff and Son Ray

It is lovely to hear from all his family. We at the archive would love to know more about him and his work. Are there any photos you could share. He was very much part of old Canvey and many Canvey Islanders had met him over the years, including myself. Ted was also my grandad, he loved to play the piano. He taught me a couple which I can still do. I remember him well and have a picture that I keep safe.
