The Bread & Honey Shop

Canvey's Best Bread

Is this the shop still in Furtherwick Road. I am sure Graham Stevens said it was part of their bakers at one time. Help Graham.

  • Yes you’re right Janet. The metal and brick work boundary belonged to Park school. The school grounds went right up to the shop until they put Foksville Road in.

  • Did this shop become the Mayflower chinese takeway? It was there for years. Dont know whats there now. Was a stop off after we had been to the rio cinema. I think it was the second chinese, after the Moonflower on the high street.

  • Actually came across this page by chance when I was searching for the Canvey connection of Honey Lantree ,the girl drummer of 60s band ‘ the Honeycombs’.
Yes this was one of the Bakery’s branch shops opened in the 1930s, formerly an estate agents, I think. There is another photo somewhere on the Archive taken at that time.
If you put S& L Bacon Co in the search box you can see the rest of it’s history in my comment there.
The unbelievable thing is that when it was Dr Hawker’s temporary surgery my Dad let our band the Premiers practice in the Doc’s Practise ( I hope I,ve got the spelling the right way round🤔) Graham.
PS Does anybody know re the rumour that Honey Lantree once lived on Canvey ??

  • Something I missed in yesterday’s comment: The blank sign board on the wall in the first photo was used to advertise General Steam Navigation boat trips. I think my Dad got paid in kind for this so as a family we occasionally got free trips to Calais in the late 50s- early 60s on the Daffodil or Royal Sovereign.Graham.🛳 😄
