On Wednesday this week Canvey Community Archive and Canvey Library hosted the Canvey Launch of Pat Reynoldson-Smith’s new book The 1953 Essex Flood Disaster – The People’s Story , written in the memory of her friend Peggy Morgan who lost her whole family in the floods.

What a great turnout considering the weather conditions earlier in the day. Pat gave a lovely talk about a very emotional subject and she was joined by members of the public who told of their own experiences.

It was so successful and we know many others wanted to come too so we are trying to sort out another larger venue for a repeat performance. Pat has agreed to give another talk. Time and place will be notified when we have got it all sorted.

Thanks Pat for making it so interesting.

  • Thanks Janet for the excellent pictures and kind words. I really enjoyed the afternoon, especially meeting again Derek and Val and for the first time. Mike Brown and other flood survivors, and it was wonderful to hear people chatting together about their childhoods on Canvey. Well done the CCA.

  • Thank you Pat and CCA for a fascinating afternoon at Canvey Library. Do you know what after 62 years its only just dawned on me that I am A Flood surviver. Being only just over two at the time it’s really never occurred to me that I was one of the lucky ones on that fateful night. My family never spoke of what happened and its certainly too late now to ask family members. Pats book and all the different posts on CCA it certainly brings it all home .
