Charles Joseph Staniland (1838-1916) studied at Birmingham School of Art and the Royal Academy and exhibited frequently in London and his native Hull. He was a prolific illustrator in contemporary journals such as the Illustrated London News and the Graphic.

He was  also the illustrator for Canvey’s Ebenezer Mather’s book ‘Nor’ard of the Dogger’.
