  • According to Geoff Barsby’s book on Canvey Island this was on Small Gains Corner and part of Small Gains Farm.

  • During the 1920s, there were two properties who’s name could meet this description. Namely “The Corner House” and “Ye Corner House”.

“Ye Corner House” – Small Gains Corner (The ALLIN Family)

“The Corner House” – Leigh Beck (The ALLINGHAM Family)

The Poor rate books call both of these properties “The Corner House” but the one at Leigh Beck described as “next Denny”. This property in the list is next to Wainwrights Stable/House/Shop which was just North of Station Road on the High St.

I cannot find what “Denny” was, I wonder if it was a name given to “Dunmow House” which was Mr Preedy’s House and shop and also very near in the list.

  • Jock Hendry  had a motor repair business in the black barn in the late 50s before he moved to the back of Hootons Garage.
