The Maurice Road Shop

Sent in by Brian Ellis.

After my father Leonard Ellis passed away in 1991 I came upon the attached photo, he has written on the back of the photo the following:

‘my uncle Arthurs shop, they later owned at least two bungalows near by here which were rented out, they also bought an old boat house’.

Steve’s Corner, Maurice Road

My father had two uncle Arthurs, Arthur Ellis and Arthur Acton. I’m trying to estabish which Arthur he has mentioned.

Is there anyway that I could find out, or is there anyone on your site who may know the owner of the shop in those days, (possibly 1930s going by the car)?

Thank you for any help that you may offer. Kind regards, Brian Ellis.

Please leave a comment below if you can help in any way.

  • I can answer your question regarding the name of the Uncle. In the 1937 Kelly’s Directory the following is entered. Acton Frances Hannah (Mrs), genl. stores, Maurice Rd.

  • Does anyone remember the water tank and refuse bin at the top of Maurice road , Arthur Reed would come every so often with his horse and cart to empty the bin.
