On the right is a photo taken in 1978 of Ray Howard, then chairman of the council, holding the award for the best new building in Essex to cater for the disabled.
The photo below was taken in 1976 shows the interior of the bar inside the centre near the swimming pool.

There is a newspaper article “Ron will fix it” I think was the headline. Dad had to completely re-engineer his plans due to a severe steel shortage. A huge voluntary effort on my father’s part.
