Mother's Union

1943 Vicarage Garden

This is a photo lent to us by Phyllis Owen. It is of the Mother’s Union meeting in the vicarage garden in 1943. On the back of the photo is the notation:

  • Mrs S A Griffiths 4 Cedar Road. Mother’s Union in vicarage garden at 2nd attempt to commence about 1943. Haven Road, Village. 1st attempt cancelled in 1941 because day air raids were becoming too numerous.’

According to W Marston in the 1947 ‘Canvey Island and its Churches’, the vicar at this time was the Rev Allan Whittaker Swallow.
