Canvey Island Guide and Brownie Packs

and St Joseph's Convent

Canvey Guides and Nuns in the Convent after the floods

From what I can gather from Phyllis Owens (I am sure someone will tell me if I have got it wrong) the Canvey Island  Brownie and Guide packs often worked together even if they were based at different churches on the Island.

Phyllis’ pack was based at St Anne’s but as can be seen from these pictures St Joseph’s Convent and the Nuns were also involved.

That looks like Phyllis Owens sitting on the floor on the right.

If you are in any of the pictures and can add names or dates etc please comment below.

  • Janet Could you ask Phyllis if she is the aunt of Bronwen Palmer? The nun on the left in the top picture looks like Sister Imelda but I can’t see her clearly enough.

  • I am seeing her tomorrow Maureen so will ask her. Regarding Sister Imelda I have temporarily put a close up of her here.

  • How is Bronwen? Is she still on the Island? We were at the Convent together. If she has an email could you please forward it to me?

  • The two nuns in the photographs are Sister. Domonic and Sister Pious; they were the guiders when myself and my sisters used to attend. We are both in the last photograph as well as some of my old school friends; lovely to see this web site, as I have only just found it.

  • In the top photograph the lady on the left in the back row is a Mrs. Finch, who had children attending St. Joseph’s school. Next to Sr. Pious on the right in the middle row is Margaret Moran, who also taught at St. Joseph’s. She was not only my Brown Owl at one point, but also my teacher; I was very fond of her. I also sang in the church choir with her and her brother and another sister, Angela playing the organ.

  • I forgot to add that I think the bottom photograph is probably about 1960/ 1961, looking at myself and my sister.

  • In the second photograph, the lady second from the right (next to Sister Dominic) is my mother Marguerite (Peggy) Gamble who helped out with the 3rd Canvey Cub Pack and eventually become Akela. My mother also helped out in the kitchens at St Joseph’s with Mrs Finch, mentioned in the first photograph by Janette Johnson.

  • I was a Queens Guide recipient in around late 60’s early 70’s. My brother just told me about this site, very exciting. Am I recognizing Sister Dominic and Sister Pius in this picture? These two amazing people were the nuns running the Girl Guide troope when I was a member! They were my salvation. Margaret Schaefer. Previously Johnson.
