The picture below is of the Drill Hall in Runnymede Road locally known as Fielder’s Folly it was built in 1935 and demolished in 1987. The pictures in the gallery below were taken by Phyllis Owens, who lives nearby, during the demolition.

Does anyone remember the dances that were held there? They always used to have a cockle stall in one corner. Can you imagine that happening nowadays?
Yes I danced in the hall in the fifties and one a prize for dancing.
My granddad was the building inspector and caught pneumonia and died after inspecting the hall in the rain 1936.

I have a newspaper cutting of a party for local orphans held in 1949/50 at this Drill Hall.
My wedding reception was held in the drill hall. 23rd January 1971. Mum and dad decorated the hall and we had a buffet. Later we held mum and dads silver wedding there.
I was Head of Estates for TAVRA (now RFCA) East Anglia 1979 to 2009 and thus was responsible for demolishing the old drill hall and providing the ATC and ACF with their modern home and rifle range.
