Christmas Past on Canvey

The Bohemia Hall and the Kynoch Club

Party time at the Bohemia Hall 1924

Christmas party time at the Bohemia Hall in 1924, situated near Small Gains Corner. In the foreground slightly blurred with hat on is Nora Cook (later Bishop) next to her with the long dark hair is a young Zoe Hammet. On the right with the dark bob and fringe is Gladys Bishop (later Matthews). Unfortunately I do not have any other names.

Christmas 1948 at the Kynoch Club

Party at the Kynock Club in 1948 with myself in the front row sitting on my cousin Tony Matthews knee next to Tricia Burton in the white dress and bow. Standing in the back row fourth from the left is Mrs. Burton and front row far right is Mrs.Dent whose son Franky became a jockey. Once again I do not have any other names except of course Father Christmas.

Can anybody put any other names to the faces?

  • My late mother in law, Eliza Buckmaster, is sitting in the front with a basket in front of her. In front of her is my ex husband, Tony Buckmaster and his brother John is directly behind him. My mother, Annie (Nan) Thorpe is leaning forward behind Mrs Dent and holding me (I have a white bow in my hair and my brother, Brian Thorpe, is slightly to the right, in front of me. Is it possible to enlarge the photo as I’m sure we could identify more people?

  • This is the largest it can be from the scan Rod has uploaded. I will see if I can borrow the photo from Rod then I can enlarge sections of it.

  • Commenting from Vancouver, BC, Canada: Searching the site, I see my grandmother – Mrs. Dent! I have just shown the photo to my mother, Mrs. Dent’s oldest daughter (Ada Elizabeth) ~ my mom is now 93! She’s enjoying the photos and recalling many happy memories growing up on Canvey Island.
