This Island

Poem by Phyllis Owens 1959

Tis not a foreign country, or remotest of the isles,
But a coming health resort, on which nature smiles.
And it is not far from London, this little place of ours,
So, many travel down this way to spend their leisure hours.
Just stroll with me along the wall on any summer day,
And see the crowds of happy folk and hear their laughter gay.
Then look across the sparkling sea, what beauty can be seen,
The Kentish coast presents itself in hues of brown and green.
Or watch the whirling sea gulls, swooping, screeching, as they fly,
As motor launch and sailing boat, or liner passes by.
Now turn your gaze more inland, to another pleasant view,
Where chalets, tents, and bungalows, all seem to welcome you.
Beyond the restful, green-laid fields, the shopping centre lies,
Where with courtesy and kindness, each shop your need supplies.
For those who seek for pleasure, then the island here abounds
With a host of good amusements, as well as funfare grounds.
And for those who are convalescing and need sea, air, and sun,
There’s no finer place than Canvey, where good health’s truly won.
So thank God for our island home, then join with me and say,
“Bring all your friends to Canvey, for a carefree holiday.”
