The Concrete barge, Canvey’s icon, has been thought to be gone since 2003, when it was smashed up overnight. In actual fact, a good half of it’s ribbed base remains, along with the very bottom of it’s right side, both made from concrete back in the 1940s. It is lined with metal wires and rods weaved throughout it’s ancient hull, and is certainly worth going to visit at the Point, where it has always been, even if nowhere near as imposing as it must have been back in the day.

the barge was a bit of history, pity she was blown up, along with the marsh beyond the wall, that used to be a fantastic place full of wildlife, but now filled in for a “club house” progress a!!
I used to play on it as a kid. I took my son to see it and was so disappointed it had gone.
Correct me if I’m wrong but vaguely recall Cliff Richard’s Shadows did a brief film clip for a film shoot there – – late 50’s / early 60’s. ?? 🤔
