Recently, friends won a bid in a local auction of many old Post Cards and Photographs. Ken & Angela Smith have kindly donated this untitled photograph that I have identified as the Stepping Stones that were across Benfleet Creek before the Colvin Bridge was built in 1931. Markings on the back indicate “B/W – 32 1307” …….. Possibly 13th July 1932? This photo clears up the mystery as to how many round stepping stones were in place – six buckets of concrete! They were eventually moved to the old Canvey Council offices in Long Road.

It was definately taken about that time if you look at the British Pathe film of the bridge you can see the stepping stones and the area on Canvey which is exactly as in the picture.
Thanks for this photo Dave. It would be interesting to find out if anybody knows anything about their history from the 30s to c.1974 when they installed in front of the old Council Offices at the instigation of my Dad, and other members of the Canvey Historical Society. Hopefully, the three surviving stones will shortly find their final resting place close to their original site. They are destined to part of the Canvey Gateway Park on the land on the east side of Canvey Rd adj to Benfleet Creek.
