An unmade Odessa Road is behind the car – look at the bungalow – it is facing towards us as though facing a road – Odessa Road.

Spot on David. The shop is Steve’s Stores in Maurice Road. facing the junction with Crescent Road.
Could one of the bungalows in the photo of Hindles road later become the little shop,which I believe is still there now.
Hindle Road was likely named after the builder R G Hindle of Redlands. Who was building homes in the area before and during the 1920s.
In the 1918 Electoral Register Robert George and Annie Eliza Hindle lived at ‘Hindle Hut’ Sunken Marsh. Perhaps one of these bungalows is ‘Hindle Hut’.
Just checked the 1929 electoral Register and the Hindle family are there in ‘Hindle Hut’ Hindles Road.
Robert George Hindle was aka Robert Solomon Hindle a builder died aged 82 in 1937 and is buried in St Katherine’s Churchyard. Annie died c1828 and Robert Solomon remarried Rose Emma Copsey who was a lot younger than him.
I believe Rose was one of the victims of the 1953 floods. Please tell me if I am wrong.
Re the Hindle family; I have an interesting quote from a letter from my great-aunt Maggie Stevens to her fiance Harold Thomas who was repatriating the wounded in Flanders. Dated 5/9/1918; ” I’m on ”our” island— pleasure to think you know it now. We all met at the station and had a good journey down, walked across the fields. The last time I went across those fields(was with you)–Do you remember–as we crossed one field I said ” that’s MR HINDLE who is going to do the building for us”—I thought he did not see us,but he did— told Mother we seemed in such a hurry he wouldn’t stop us to speak.” The building referred to was the’ dream’ bungalow the new ”Settlement’ to be built on the corner of Baardwyck Ave and High St.
I think the Hindles Road Picture (1920’s) was taken from smallgains creek sea wall and the view behind is Tewkes Creek, breaches in the wall took place the far right of the picture.
