Preserve the Beauty

Written by Lin Swanson's Uncle, Henry Bolland c1930s

A Canvey Farm
E Etherington

The beauty of the Island now
is past it’s former glory
For everwhere is changing fast
to tell it’s own sad story

Where are the farms and fields that once
with crops or beasts were thriving?
Alas around the island now
theres very few surviving

The meadows are no longer ploughed
nor crops of wheat there growing
Each year the binder comes no more
to thresh the corn when mowing

Alas no more will e’re be seen
the horse- drawn plough or harrow
Or see the wheat grow there again
in furrows straight and narrow

The cows that in the meadow once
with bovine calm stood gazing
Their luscious meadows are no more
for them to stand there grazing

One’s memories of bygone days
to us alone, endearing
Like places that we used to know
with time are disappearing.

Whilst progress changes everything
tis surely still one’s duty
That in the course of change and time
we still preserve the beauty.
