J.Went advert

This postcard of the Lobster Smack was used by James Went as an advert for the Inn. Possibly sold to his patrons or perhaps given to them to use thus spreading news of the facilities available at the Inn. Not sure of the date of the picture, perhaps 20s.

James Went was born in Basildon in 1860, he was the proprietor of the Inn from 1917-1933 where he lived with his wife Charlotte. Prior to that he was the licensed victualler at the Kynoch Hotel. He died in 1937, when he lived at ‘Rogusa’, Grovenor Road, South Benfleet.
