The Queen's Coronation

Canvey Celebrates

Does anyone know where this picture was taken and who are the children?

This lovely picture of the celebrations on Canvey in 1953 was sent to me some time ago. As we all know the year of the Coronation was a devastating year for the people of Canvey Island. The Coronation celebrations must have a been difficult and emotional time. But as can be seen from this picture everyone had rallied round to make it a good day to remember.

If you recognise where this was taken or anyone in the picture please comment below. If you have stories of the coronation celebrations or pictures we would love you to add them to the site.

  • This looks like a council house in Thameside Crescent, North Avenue etc. I can’t see the number on the door but I’m sure that’s a council house.

  • Definitely North avenue estate, there were lot of street parties, dressing up do’s etc in this street as there were a lot of children having moved here from London. All very friendly families

  • My cousin and I are in the photo. I’m second from right and my cousin Christina is third from right. We were 4 years old. My family lived at 48 North Avenue at the time the photo was taken. We moved to number 50 I think in early 1956. My parents names are Len and Betty Eaton.
We immigrated to Canada in July 1957 when I was 8 years old. I have lived my entire life in Toronto , Canada.
