The Queen's Coronation

Canvey Celebrates

By Janet Penn

This lovely picture of the celebrations on Canvey in 1953 was sent to me some time ago. As we all know the year of the Coronation was a devastating year for the people of Canvey Island. The Coronation celebrations must have a been difficult and emotional time. But as can be seen from this picture everyone had rallied round to make it a good day to remember.

If you recognise where this was taken or anyone in the picture please comment below. If you have stories of the coronation celebrations or pictures we would love you to add them to the site.

This looks like a council house in Thameside Crescent, North Avenue etc. I can't see the number on the door but I'm sure that's a council house.

Definitely North avenue estate, there were lot of street parties, dressing up do's etc in this street as there were a lot of children having moved here from London. All very friendly families

The little girl on the left looks like my niece Heather Sanders. I think the house number is fifty one.

The boy 4th from left with the feather in his hat is Philip Angerstien.  The Angerstein family lived at number 19 North Avenue many years ago.  I am the daughter of Elsie Angerstein who become pickett and we too lived at north avenue.

The girl in the box is Janet Barsby, Carol Beare is fourth on the right, Edwina Amore is sitting down in the front and Lynn Blacker is the little girl in the dark dress on right hand side of Janet. This was taken in North Avenue for the Queens coronation.
