They've waited 25 years for this moment
Essex Newsman October 1949
For twenty-five years Canvey’s progress has been hindered by the lack of a proper approach to the Island. When the Colver Bridge was built over 16 years ago it helped, but the ‘bottleneck’ of narrow street from Benfleet and the level crossing remained.
Just before the outbreak of World War II it was hoped that a bridge from the Downs would be built. The Essex Way approach road from the Downs was completed, but the war stopped further developments.
Now Alderman E.A. Munday has told the Council that the E.C.C. Highways Committee had “given instructions for this scheme (the high level bridge) to be developed in greater detail with a view to it being carried out as and when the restrictions imposed by H.M. Government in relation to capital works on highways are removed and funds can be made available for works of this magnitude.”
