Having served in The Merchant Navy, I am still interested in shipping and love to watch the ships pass Canvey Island on their way up river. It amazes me to see the size of the container ships of to day compared with the size of the steamer I served my apprentice on in 1939. The two crew lists attached are interesting, 13 for a container ship against 37 including two passenger for a steamer of the 1930s.
