Evacuated

This photo is me and was from the front page of the Evening Standard I think when we were evacuated to my Aunts in London in Jan 53. Sadly my mother who kept this picture all her life did not keep the whole page so not sure of the paper it could have been the Evening News. I do not remember this being taken, in fact I remember very little about the floods being only 3 and a bit.

We lived in the Driveway. My Grandmother and Grandad, known as Nannie and Poppie, lived at No 20 and we lived at No 10. They were Nellie and George Bigsby. We went to their bungalow and my first memory was of being shown the fishes in the water outside the door. I expect this was Nannie trying to keep me amused and not frightened. My next memory is of being lifted into the back of a lorry and taken to the station. I later knew this to be a Canvey Supply lorry as Vera and John Lawrence are my Uncle and Aunt.

My Mum, Marjorie Affleck nee Bigsby, used to show the picture not because I was the cutest little girl to arrive from the Island that day but because she had made the outfit I was wearing, including the leggings and the bonnet!
