Views from a local Painter

Ralph Hollingdale & his wife Thea – 2008

During a walk around Canvey last year I bumped into a gentleman sitting on the old Concrete Oil Refinery Jetty near the Lobster Smack. It turned out Ralph Hollingdale was a local painter and after a chat we exchanged contact details.

Later my brother Steve visited Ralph and his wife Thea on behalf of the Canvey Community Archive to see Ralph’s his paintings and chat.

Ralph was born in 1938 and was a professional diamond mounter, painting as a hobby now for over 40 years. Ralph & Thea moved from Rayners Lane in Harrow to Canvey Island during 1961/1962. Thea bought Monty’s Hair Saloon from Berty Tribble’s wife 34 years ago, after working there for 8 years. Their son Andrew played Rugby and threw the Hammer for Furtherwick Park School.

Ralph designed the pennent for the Island Yacht Club. Below are some of Ralph’s wonderful paintings, click on the thumbnails for a closer look.
