An idea of how a 'Wick' may have looked

From documents by Mercia Langstone

Drawing by Janet Dolling

Mercia Langstone was the History Teacher/Deputy Head at Furtherwick Park School. She put together and printed for the school a lot of historical information. From one of these we found this picture of what a ‘Wick’ may have looked like.

A wick was a small hut used by the shepherds to milk the ewes. No picture has ever been found of a wick. The areas where the wicks were built became farms such as Furtherwick, Knightswick, Northwick etc.
