Perhaps it’s because covering yourself in creek mud was beneficial for various ailments.

Yea, it’s mud, what would Canvey be without it’s mud! No summer was complete without a wallow in the mud pool, between the Shell Beach swimming pool(now called Concord) and the old Dutch seawall.

During W.W.11, our little gang from the Parkway-Driveway area used to play at Dead Mans Bay (Thorney Bay), it wasn’t too far to run home if the air raid siren sounded.!! We had heard that the mud was a health benefit, not that this meant anything to 8-11 year olds at the time. We would smother (cake) ourselves with that lovely mud and wait for the tide…….to wash it off and enjoy a swim before going home. Great simple fun.!!
