The 1953 Flood.

Survivors.

Flood survivors in a refuge centre.

This photo shows the Balma family in King John School, Shipwright’s Drive which had been turned into a refuge centre for Flood survivors. The photo was provided by Stanley Perry. The Balma’s are his sister-in-law’s family. From the left is his sister-in-law, her father, Sheila Yalworth nee Balma, June and Norma. Norma later emigrated to Australia. As well as the family members the budgie (hence the cage) and the cat (under June’s arm) were rescued.
