Paul & Winnie Capser Photographs

More documents showing their life on Canvey

Here are more photographs and documents about Paul & Winnie Capser, Canvey Island’s Punch & Judy family. The first photo shows a crowd posing by the Punch & Judy tent, with the Capser’s van in the background. I believe that may be Winnie in the background far left, the photo perhaps taken by Paul? Do you recognise anyone in the photograph? If so please leave a comment below.

Children by the Capser Punch & Judy Van – Are you here?

The second photo must have been taken from the back garden of a bungalow on the north side of Ash Road as you can see the Rio Cinema and the parade of shops. It’s almost certainly the same bungalow pictured at the bottom of the page. Both photos are dated Feburary 8th 1953 which is a week after the great flood. I believe the Island was completely evacuated at this time. Who’s bungalow was it?

The third photo shows Paul Capser’s van, the livery seems to have been painted over or faded. Is that the packed up show tent on the roofrack? What type of van was this?

The fourth picture is a Post Card featuring Canvey’s Eastern Esplanade with left to right the Labworth Cafe, Monico Hotel, Casino and Andrew’s Arcade at May Avenue.

  • I am sure that my cousin and I are in the first picture I am standing half hidden by the boy with hand up over his face on the left of centre. My cousin Peter Beckford is standing at the back right hand side with the dark jumper in front of the lady by the van
