  • I have seen this picture before and always wondered about the claim the seller makes that it is 1922, although it might be true.

The thing that concerns me is the telegraph poles. It does not look like the telephone system as there tends to be cross members at the top with multiple wires on it.

I believe the telegraph system also was quite distinct and also that ran down Canvey Road to the village.

It cannot be the Mains electricity as that arrived in 1931 with the bridge. Unless this area had its own unique supply. There were several generators on the Island (like Sutherland amusements).

Anyone have any ideas of the location?

  • We have this photo somewhere on-site but finding it is easier said than done. Cant remember if we knew where it was taken. Re the telegraph poles. Dont forget Hester!!! He had poles all over the island.

  • The postmark is very clear, 24 July 1922 from Southend on Sea. The poles look like electricity.

I did look on the site but I didn’t  find here, sorry if it is a duplicate

  • It does not matter if it is a duplicate David. We have nearly 5000 pages on here over 10years we are bound to get them and as I said finding the other one is hard. I just know it is on here somewhere but I have a feeling it is not as clear as this one.
