I understand that his real name was Ernie, but that he was known as ‘Jack’ and also ‘Slasher’ (apparently he relished the nickname). Does anybody know for sure which was his proper name, or anything else about him?

MY Favorite teacher too at canvey secondary school 1960-1964. He was a great teacher strict but one of the best.

I well remember ‘Jack’ Eales when I attended William Read secondary school (we knew it as the ‘Old School’) from 1951-1955, he had the amazing ability to see through the back of his head! (or so it seemed) if we had an itch we were’nt allowed to scratch it and he always noticed if we did. A disciplinarian yes, but we respected him.

I remember Mr Eals, i think he was the maths teacher, i have had many a sore hand where the desk lid was slammed down on them. I left the secondary school in 1964, does any one remember me from that year.

Mr Eals was so called ( slasher ) because he used to carry a huge pair of gauntlet gloves , he used to swipe you with them when you were not looking , or if he came up behind you and you were doing something you shouldn’t . a super lovely teacher I often wonder what he would make of todays schools ?

I have commented previously about Mr “Slasher Eales”, yes, he was a strict teacher and taught Scripture and Gardening that I recall. Anyone going through the school system during his tenure would leave equipped with at least 4 principles going for them. 1/ Respect for parents, 2/ Respect for teachers, 3/ respect for the laws of the land, 4/ Respect for ones elders.!! Principles that seem to have been lost in some of todays society. Mr Eales was “one of a kind” in my humble opinion. Gerald Hudson

SLASER taught us this prayer does any one else remember it ? ** ** oh lord our heavenly father Almighty and ever lasting God. Who safely brought us to this begining of this day Defend us in they same with thy mighty power to do always that is riotous in thy sight Through Jesus Christ our lord .AMEN I think its about the only thing I learned that I have still in my memory

A very strict teacher, does anyone else remember that we had to take our exercise books to him when they were full, he would then count the pages to make sure that we had not scrapped any paper before issuing a new book?

I was a pupil at William Read School, and also the Secondary Modern in Furtherwick Road. I left at 15 in 1962, having been in class Upper 1, and well remember Jack Eales. He always used to say that his bark was worse than his bite, but I’m not so sure about that. Most of the kids in my class were afraid of him, except perhaps the more rebellious ones – John Webb is a name that springs to mind. However, he was also a good teacher, and seemed to be well respected!

I remember old slasher he gave me an “F” in religious instruction. I remember the speach he gave when he retired, on stage at school, old Fred kept banging his foot on the floor hoping he would hurry up and get it over with.
