“Summer morning – low water on the Chapman sands – Sea reach.
Around the feet of the pile lighthouse, the Chapman Light, where the sands were firm, stretching in a gentle bank for a couple of miles in the direction of Southend Pier, this was a favourite place for holiday makers – cricket, football etc: shrimps and cockles for the taking.
The Chapman light was demolished about 1957, after serving for a period of about 100 years as a Thamesmouth Pilotage and navigational aid to shipping. It was sited just over half a mile from the Canvey foreshore.”

Yes Frank you could and still can, to the area.
