Canvey Photos

40s-80's

Here are a few extra photos that did not fit my story pages. They are poor quality, but do show what Canvey beach area looked like from the 1940’s onwards.

I have included some grainy shots for interest, for instance the pony rides and what I believe to be the seafront (?) with the family playing cricket or rounders.

There are also two coloured photos of Florence Road when I visited there in the early 80’s (I think) or late 70’s.

  • Thanks for all these pictures and words Tricia. These are the years I also remember of the Island, from when I was born 1947 til we left to live in Norfolk in 1962. Janet has got some very similar pictures, somewhere in the archives, of my brother and me on those ponies in the early 50’s.

  • I have fond memories of the Punch & Judy show on the beach. I remember that sometimes you won a ball on a piece of elastic – the ball was made of paper I think and covered in a coloured mesh. We watched while Mum and Dad had tea on the beach served on a tray with real china including a teapot. Memories of holidays fro 50’s, 60′ and 70’s. Can anyone remember the penny arcade built of wood at the end of May Avenue?

  • I lived in Florence Road from 1962 to 1969 and can remember when I first moved there it being lined with little bungalows with verandas. In fact that bungalow looks very like the one opposite our house which was a new build. When I first moved there the road was unmade just gravel. Next to our house was a field that would take you all the way to Maurice Road. Gradually all the bungalows were knocked down and replaced by new builds. I can also remember all the dykes that eventually got filled in. I came back to Canvey last week and took a ride down Florence Road to bring back some memories.

  • What a shock to see myself from all those years ago. Seated in front enthralled with Mr Punch, within the Punch and Judy 1950’s photo. What happened to those carefree days? I still believe that’s the way to do it.
