Cornelius Vermuyden School

Rebuild and upgrade

Giant Triffids appearing above the trees!

When I first saw the Piling Machines at Cornelius Vermuyden School they looked like giant Triffids towering over the trees. The School is currently going through a major refurbishment and construction of new buildings to make it into a bigger school. According to the construction company’s leaflet, during the school holidays they will be doing the ground works for the new buildings, hence the pile driving machines, which I can hear as I am typing this. The construction company, Skanska are constructing a piling mat of crushed concrete. Of the actually piling there will be 515 piles which they hope to complete in four weeks.

They will also be removing nine trees from the site in conjunction with Essex Ecology Services and the Local Authority. According to my son, who is a surveyor and has worked in the industry for many years, starting in subsidence ‘Willows in particular should be removed from site because of their roots and the vast amount of water they required’. Extensive landscaping and tree planting will be done once the school is completed.
